1. Development and Evaluation of Adaptive Ramp Metering
Several adaptive ramp metering algorithms including ALINEA, BOTTLENECK, and ZONE were developed as Paramics pluigns and they were evaluated in the enhanced Paramics environment.
2. Traffic Management System Master Plan – I405/I5 Simulation
The purpose of the project is to make the master plan for the deployment of TMS strategies in California. These TMS strategies include Incident Management (IM), arterial signal management, Traveler Information (TI) systems, and Ramp Metering (RM). The method applied in this study is to use micro-simulation as an evaluation tool to evaluate the effectiveness of each TMS strategy. The urban/suburban Interstate 680 (southbound only) corridor in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area, between Pleasanton and Milpitas, and the urban Interstate 405/Interstate 5 corridor in City of Irvine of Orange County were selected for the micro-simulation phase of this project.
We developed the I405/I5 Paramics simulation model. It is a 7 mile by 4 mile network, including I-5 from the interchange with I-405 to SR-133, I-405 from the interchange with I-5 to Culver Dr, and two major parallel streets of I-405, i.e. Alton Pkwy, Barranca Pkwy, and all related crossing streets. The model was calibrated against observed data from the field and dynamic OD tables were applied in the model. Then, the calibrated model was used to investigate the effectiveness of each TMS strategy and the combination of several TMS strategies.
